A fun way to kill some time

I love traveling and although I’ve never been to Europe, I’ve been everywhere in between. I’ve driven cross country 4 times and it would’ve been fun to have had a site like Wayki along the way. Wayki is a service that lets you post markers with messages and photos anywhere on a map. Each marker has it’s own URL which you can share with friends or family. It’s very easy to jump to different parts of the world to view other markers and could actually be informative if you’re lucky enough to find useful information about a place you may be traveling to. Here’s my quick screencast tour of Wayki:

Two web applications to help you shed that extra winter weight

Summertime is almost here. That means BBQ’s, camping trips, and a lot less clothing. I’ve recently started my workout routine that I sort of brushed aside this winter when a fluffy sweatshirt seemed much more appealing then workout gear. There are quite a few diet and exercise sites out there but some are far too demanding for the average person that just wants to get healthy and not have to join a social networking site along the way.

FavoriteRun is a great place to find and create running, biking, and walking routes in your neighborhood. They have free account which is just fine for someone looking to find some new trails near their home. Here’s my screencast tour of FavoriteRun:

FitDay is a diet and exercise journal where you can easily enter in the foods you eat throughout the day, calculate your caloric intake, set goals, view graphs of your progress, keep a journal, and more. It wants to make you accountable for what you’re eating by showing you every gram of fat, every calorie, and every evil carbohydrate. Here’s my screencast tour of FitDay:

Netvibes in a nutshell

I recently read an article on Lifehacker which compared various homepages. I thought since I did a screencast of My Yahoo!, which didn’t rank very high in the review, I’d give Netvibes a go. Netvibes is a free homepage that gives you access to a ton of feeds, modules, videos, podcasts, email, etc. You can drag and drop your modules and feeds anywhere on your page and they have 10 themes to choose from. Netvibes also has tab and content suggestions to help you get started. Here’s a screencast run through of Netvibes.

Snap.com gives you another way to search by giving you previews of your results as you scroll through them. You can customize your settings, use your keyboard to browse through your results quickly, and there’s a handy snap image search as well.

Online invoicing for small businesses

SimplifyThis is an online invoicing service that is aimed at small businesses. It allows you to track and accept payments online, customize your invoices and add your company logo, send invoices via email, etc. It’s only available through a free trial at the moment and there’s no date posted when this will end. In my screencast I mention that I can’t find any help pages but after further digging I did find this. This is a feature and tutorial screencast to help you get started.

Customizing your own My Yahoo!

My Yahoo! allows you to take all of the features of Yahoo! and put them in one place. Yes, Yahoo! has a lot of features and that’s why My Yahoo! is so great. Just take what you need such as, email, your calendar, weather, maps, RSS, and much more and add it to your My Yahoo! page. You can have a page for work and a page for fun. It’s all totally customizable. There’s so much you can add to My Yahoo! I decided to just make a screencast tour as sort of an introduction.

A users guide to Bloglines

Keeping up with the theme of the week, I decided to make a screencast showing off some features that Bloglines offers. I’ve always used Bloglines and after making this demo I’ve decided to keep it that way.  In addition to being a feed reader, Bloglines provides you with a blog, package tracking, weather forecasts, and allows you to easily search blog posts as well as discover new feeds. But wait there’s more! Watch the screencast to find out :) .

A closer look at Google Reader

I’ve been meaning to give Google Reader a closer look for some time. It has some nice features such as personalized trends, feed sharing, and a nice customizable clip that you can place on your website or blog and displays your Readers latest shared items. I did create a screencast for Google Reader a while back but it wasn’t very good. You may say the same about this screencast but making it showed me a few things and inched me a bit closer to abandoning my “security blanket” reader for something new.
