I feel like a lot of Internet radio/music players have been popping up lately.  There’s Jango, Deezer, Mixaloo, Songza, and now BoomShuffle.  As of right now BoomShuffle is pulling ahead of Jango, which was my favorite until about 4 hours ago.  BoomShuffle is like Internet radio that you have total control over, almost.  The biggest difference between BoomShuffle and something like Pandora, is that BoomShuffle allows you to create music mixes filled only with songs you choose.  They have a very extensive music library and you can create as many mixes as you want.  You do need to fill your mixes with at least 15 different tracks from at least 15 different artists otherwise you’ll only get a 30 second preview of your songs.  Oh no, they’re forcing me to create a huge playlist of music that I can listen to all day long.  Who cares?  I had no problem creating my mixes.  In fact, my first mix has over 40 songs in it and it only took me about 10 minutes to create it.  The catch is, however, that you don’t get to choose the order in which your songs will play.  You also can only skip over a few songs an hour – which is how they’re keeping themselves in the Internet radio category.  You can listen to other BoomShuffle members mixes and embed them on your website or blog.  They also have a pop-out player so you can navigate away from BoomShuffle without loosing your tunes.  Here’s my screencast tour of BoomShuffle:

Hi, thanks for the post. I’ve already checked out all the radio links!

I agree with you – BoomShuffle seems the best from my quick look so far. So many of these new ’social’ radio sites are confusing, or require so much effort just to get started. However BoomShuffle has a pretty simple concept that makes sense. I think it might work for me.

I still love Pandora, but they are in need of a UI refresh.

btw – first time on your blog. Found this post through my Google alert for online radio. I’ve been on the search for new radio sites and they seem to be popping up left and right these days.

I’ve also been a big fan of Jango, since the private beta. I just recently checked out Boomshuffle too — and while it may be a good fit for some people, Jango is still hands-down the BEST and EASIEST internet radio site out there.

The music never gets stale — and they do a good job of playing the music that you actually like. Also, the stream is never interrupted as you bounce around the site looking at artist or other user profiles.

I love all the activity in the space though. It’s great for music lovers!

Yeah, on closer inspection of BoomShuffle they got some work to do.

Almost impossible to create a Reggae play list as they just don’t have many songs to choose from.

I selected an album to add and it says to ‘click the add button on the left’, but there was no ‘add’ button. UGH. I tried clicking on everything. I tried dragging it over (web 2.0?). Finally I tried a different album and there I saw the add buttons. Apparently they list albums whether they have the songs or not. Very confusing and very frustrating.

And since they don’t have very much reggae music to choose from it was really frustrating clicking through all the albums to try and figure out what they do have. They list it whether they have it or not, it’s not until you try to add it that you find out they don’t have it. Thats brain dead. I’m not going to click on everything until I find out what they have and don’t have.

Oh well, it’s beta. I try again in a few months.
