Browse Inappropriate Websites In Super Sneaky Mode With Vanishd

Vanished allows you to browse Websites that may not be appropriate for work, underneath a more appropriate site.  There’s nothing to download and can be quickly shut off if a co-worker creeps up behind you to see what you’re viewing.  Currently, some features, such as watching flash videos, only work in Internet Explorer but the secret viewing window works in IE, Firefox, and Safari.  To see Vanishd in action, watch the screencast below:

Ubiquity Lets You Tell Your Browser What To Do

Ubiquity is a new experiment from Mozilla Labs that allows you to take bits and pieces of the Web and make them work together just by typing in basic text.  It’s an Extension for Firefox that allows you, as the user, to decide what Ubiquity should do.  This happens by giving Ubiquity commands.  On the developer end, it allows you to create commands that other people can subscribe to and use.

I installed Ubiquity this morning and have, and can not, stop using it.  I also recommend checking out new commands that are being developed.  To see Ubiquity in action, watch the screencast below:

Remove Images From Web Pages And Freak Out Your Friends With RIP

Remove It Permanently (RIP) is a Firefox Extension that allows you to remove images or text from a Web page with a simple right mouse click.

After you RIP something, it will be deleted until you choose to undo it in your RIP options.  Besides being able to remove annoying banner ads or Myspace graphics, you could also install RIP on a friends computer and RIP images from sites that they frequent.  Imagine their surprise when they go to facebook and there’s no more facebook login screen.  I don’t think that’s the purpose of RIP but I have a devious mind.  To see RIP in action, watch the screencast below:

SocialU – Where Social Networking Sites Live

If you’re a social networking addict and love to spy on see what sites your friends are hanging out on and what sites they’re bookmarking, then SocialU is an Adobe Air Application that you’ll probably dig.  I didn’t know what else to think when I first installed SocialU other than, “omg, it’s seriously a browser where social networking sites live”.  It’s more than that but it took me some time to figure out exactly what to do, because there’s a lot going on.

I first learned of SocialU last night when the infamous “Paisano” sent me an invite.  Before reading anything else I have to say, I would check out his much more in depth review on Mashable here.

After you install SocialU, you can set up a profile with all of the social networking sites you belong to.  Every time you click on one of your sites, it opens in a new tab.  From there, you’ll need to log in and then use it just like you would in any other browser.  But SocialU adds the ability to comment, rate, and bookmark sites as well.  Everything you publicly favor or rate will show up in a type of news feed so other users can check out what sites you like.  Does any of this sound familiar?  You’ll also know which of your friends are online because their profile picture will be highlighted in green.  If you’re viewing someone elses profile, any social networking site they are logged into will also be highlighted.  I didn’t see any way to opt out of this option but would love the ability to do so.

SocialU also pays you (think monopoly money) for participation.  You can buy your friends gifts, rent yourself an apartment, and even buy a boat.  As a matter of fact, I just received a Canon Camcorder.  Active users will also appear under the “movers and shakers” section, which should help increase their popularity.  SocialU is currently in private beta, but you can see what it looks like in the screencast below:

Old Flame Have Your Old Phone #? Make It Easier For Them To Find You With Avakit

Avakit is a service that allows you to create a profile with your your old phone numbers, email addresses, and other social networking information so that people who have lost touch with you can easily find you.

Avakit works almost like a customized search engine for your contact information.  Before any of your information will even show up in a search you need to create a free account and add the information you think people will use to search for you.  This could be an old phone number, your old college email address, or even a Facebook profile.  You can also add your current information.  After you add the search criteria, enter in what information you would like made public.  Again, you can choose as much or as little information as you please.  I decided to make my current email address and name public.

I know that you can find information on most people by doing a basic Google search, but if people really started using Avakit, it could prove to be a very useful way to reach out to old co-workers, friends, or even your old high school crush.  To learn more, watch the screencast below:

3 Firefox Extensions That Make Tabbed Browsing Even Better

I’ll never forget the day when my brother glared at me with a look of disgust as I opened a new window in Firefox to type in a URL for a site he wanted me to check out.  Basically the conversation went something like this:

“Wtf are you doing?! Why don’t you just open a new tab?”  “What’s a tab?”  “Oh geeze, Molly”.

That was the day I discovered how wonderful and productive tabbed browsing could be.  Hopefully these three Firefox Extensions will make your tabbed browsing experience, even better:

FaviconizeTab allows you to shrink your tabs, down to the size of a favicon, with a couple of mouse clicks.  If you’re in the habit of keeping an outrageous amount of tabs open, then this will be a lifesaver:

Find In Tabs allows you to search for text across all tabs.  You can choose to highlight the text and you can view which tab contains the text on whatever page you’re viewing:

Badges On Favicon will add a badge onto an open tab that contains new content.  It shows the number of new items in Gmail, twitter search, Netvibes, etc.  There aren’t a lot of compatible services yet, but this is still a very useful Extension:

Muxtape Fans Rejoice! 8tracks To The Rescue

If you’re one of the sad souls mourning the recent shutdown of Muxtape, then I think 8tracks may just brighten your day.  8tracks allows you to create and share virtual mixtapes.

8tracks doesn’t work exactly like Muxtape, but the idea is somewhat the same.  You can upload your own music to create a mix, listen to other users mixes, and share your mixes with friends.

You need to add at least 8 tracks to make a mix public and your mixes can’t have more than 2 songs by the same artist.  Other than that, it’s a great way to share your favorite mixes with friends and discover new music.  To see how 8tracks works, watch the screencast below:

HitMeLater Is A Procrastinators Dream Email Application

How many times have you read an email, promised yourself you would answer it “in a couple of hours”, and then completely forgot about it?  If you’ve never done this before then you should pat yourself on the back and skip this screencast.  For everyone else, HitMeLater may help you avoid those uncomfortable “I’m still waiting for a response from my email last week” situations.  HitMeLater is a tool that will resend an email to you when you have time to actually answer it.

You don’t need to sign up for anything, invite your friends, or create a profile sharing all of your favorite movies.  Whenever you receive an email that you need to remember to come back to later, just forward it to HitMeLater.  In order to tell HitMeLater when you want to receive an email nudge, just enter in the amount of hours in front of HitMeLater, 2@hitmelater.com, and in two hours you’ll receive the email again.  If you want the email resent in 6 hours then replace the 2 with a 6.  You can also use days of the week, like Monday, and HitMeLater will send your email on the next Monday. There’s really not much to learn, but I thought a screencast was in order anyway because it’s a nice little tool that, hopefully, someone will find useful.  To see HitMeLater in action, watch the screencast below:

Zapproved Helps Groups Make Decisions

Zapproved is an application that helps you get approval for a project or event from a group of people.  It’s all done “email style” and allows for you, as the planner, to get a simple yes or no from people you’re working on a project with.

The first step is to create a proposal of what decision you need an answer for.  The proposal includes a title, due date, project title, priority level, and description.  You can also attach files to a proposal.  Then you just need to enter in email addresses of the people who need to approve your proposal and wait for them to respond.  Your recipients will receive an email where they can choose to approve, deny, or simply comment on your proposal.  In your Zapproved account, you’ll be able to track who has responded and choose to close or cancel the proposal.

Zapproved will also archive all of your proposals so you can find them later and store all of your contacts each time you add someone new.  To learn more about Zapproved, watch the screencast below:
