App Happy Episode 6: MobileRSS

MobileRSS syncs with your Google Reader so you can keep up with all of your favorite blogs and websites at all times.  There’s a free version and a pro for $2.99 (iTunes links) which I’ll show you in the screencast.

After you install it and sign in with your Google account it will automatically sync up.  All of your folders, tags, shared and stared items will be in place along with people who you follow.  MobileRSS works a lot like Google Reader and you can also share items via email, Twitter, Facebook, Instapaper, and more.

I installed both the free and paid-for versions and am happy with both.  If you’re unsure about spending the money then install the free version, it works great and will give you a feel of what you get for your money.

Create Virtual Idea Boards on Pinterest

I finally got my invite for Pinterest this week and I’ve been having so much fun exploring all of the beautiful pinboards that early users have created.  It’s easy to create your own boards — when you come across something that strikes your fancy simply use the bookmarklet to “pin” it to your board.

If you find something you like on another person’s board (there is plenty to like) you can let them know by “liking” the item or “repinning” it to your own board.

I’m thinking Pinterest is going to be a great help for me in planning Molly’s upcoming bridal shower:)

I do have 10 invites — so let me know if you want one.

3 Google Chrome Extensions I Use Daily

Google Chrome has a lot of Extensions worth checking out, but these are three that I find myself using throughout the day.  Don’t expect a lot of bells and whistles here, folks – these three Extensions just help me get things done a bit quicker.  Watch the screencasts that follow the brief introduction to see how they can work for you:

The Picnik Extension for Chrome allows you to easily take screenshots and edit them using the online image editor Picnik.com.

The Session Manager Extension gives you a really handy way to save your browsing sessions so that you can come back to them later – without having to bookmark a bunch of sites.

Tab Menu is an Extension that allows you to easily sort through, organize, and even close your tabs within a drop-down menu in your bookmarks toolbar.

Duffel is a Wish List for Trip Planning

Duffel is a trip planning tool that allows you to clip and save ideas and links for places you are planning on visiting or for a vacation that you dream of someday taking.

duffel_logo

Creating a Duffel is simple:   Select the location of where you want to go, give your trip a name such as, “When I win the lottery,” and then choose to make it private or public.  Your Duffel will then be created and open preloaded with suggestions of where to stay, sightseeing attractions, and notes that can be edited.

duffel_1

If you added dates to your Duffel (you don’t have to add dates, which is helpful since most of my trips are wishful thinking) then you can drag and drop notes and activities under each day that you’ll be in a location to create an itinerary.  You can also invite friends to join you on Duffel and allow them to collaborate with you.  You can add other Duffel users as contacts so that in the future you can easily invite them to collaborate on a trip.

Probably the most useful aspect of Duffel is the bookmarklet.  It allows you to add any Web page that you’re viewing to a Duffel and add notes, phone numbers, and addresses.  So if I find myself on a Website for a luxurious hotel in Paris, I can simply click on “Add to Duffel” and add it to my “When Pigs Fly” trip.  To see Duffel in action, check out the screencast below (best viewed in HD in full screen):

Create and Share Lists of your Favorite Links with Linkli.st

Linkli.st allows you to quickly and easily create lists out of links that you find on the Web.  You can share these lists with friends and allow others to add links to your list, which is great for collaboration.  It’s free to use and only requires a sign-up if you wish to use all of the handy features.

linklist_logo

You begin by giving your list a name – I called my first list, “Recipe Ideas for Thanksgiving,” which I filled with links to online recipes that I’m thinking of making for Thanksgiving.  I made my list public and allowed others to add to the list.  When you enable these features, other people can see your list and add relevant links to it.  People can also reply to a list, which really just creates a new list which will be linked to the original list.  The “reply” feature had me a bit confused at first, so hopefully when you see it in the screencast you’ll get my drift. There’s also a bookmarklet which enables you to add links to your lists, wherever you are on the Web.

linklist_1

You can share the URL of your Linklist with friends and grab the embed code for your own blog or Website.  People can also subscribe to your different lists so they’ll know when you add something new.

Linklist doesn’t have set rules for how you should use it, and that’s one of the reasons I like it so much.  Planning a vacation?  Create an ideas Linklist and share it with your traveling companion.  Want to show off a list of your favorite blogs?  Create a favorites Linklist and share it with your Twitter followers.  Check it out and if you create a Linklist, share it in the comments!

Clicker: Like Tivo For Online Video

Clicker helps you find and save video that’s available to watch online, from sources all over the Web.  It’s in private beta now but I received an invite and thought I’d show you around.

clicker_1

After you sign in you can immediately start searching for your favorite TV shows, movies, music, and Web originals to save to your playlist.  When you find what you’re looking for (using TV as an example) you can add an entire season or just a single episode.  If you add an entire season then every time an episode is available to view online, it will be dropped right into your account.

clicker_2

Clicker is also part wiki – meaning that you can edit the show descriptions, tags, and add notes and character descriptions.  These edits are reviewed by the Clicker staff before publication.

clicker_3

After you watch a video that you have in your queue playlist it will automatically be placed in your “watched video” section so you can find it again.  On the Clicker about page they note that Netflix will soon be added so I assume that you’ll be able to also store movies available on “Watch Instant”. You can sign up to get an invite to the service here.

A Quick Look at Yahoo Meme

Yahoo Meme is a Microblogging service from Yahoo that recently launched in English.  Basically, Yahoo Meme gives you a way to quickly post text (140 characters), images, videos from YouTube and Vimeo, and MP3′s (you can only link to an MP3 on the Web).  These items can quickly be reposted by other users and commented on.  It’s currently invite only, but once you receive an invite you can sign in with your Yahoo credentials.

meme_1

You can create a brief profile with a title and description of your Meme, a photo, and that’s about it.  You can choose to follow other Meme users so you can keep up with what they’re posting.  The reposing feature works quite nicely, and you can keep track of conversations about an item by viewing the comment thread.

meme_2

When I got the invite to Yahoo Meme and signed in, my first thought was, “So…it’s Tumblr without all the features?”.  That’s pretty much what I still think, even after browsing around the site for a bit today, but I’m willing to give it some time since it’s still in the very early stages of development (I hope).

Bookmark or Open Multiple Links with Firefox Add-On Multi Links

Have you ever been reading an article and found that there were multiple links you were interested in following?  I know, it can be time consuming to open each one individually — well, maybe not so much, but anything that can speed up this process is something I am interested in.  Which is why after reading this article at CNET today I went ahead and installed Firefox add-on Multi Links.

multilinks

After the add-on is installed, just tell it what to do with the links you select.  You can open each one in a new tab, in a new window or add them to a bookmarks folder.  After that, it’s just a matter of a right-mouse click to select an area containing links.  If you are reading something and you don’t want all of the links in a certain area, you can hold down your CTRL or Shift key to draw multiple boxes around different parts of a site.

GButts Gets You To The Google Service You Need, With One Click

GButts is a Firefox Add-on that allows you to create a single menu loaded with all of your favorite Google services.

gbutts_logo

After you install it you can choose to have an icon for each service displayed or a drop down from the Google logo (which is what I chose).  You can select as many, or as few, services as you’d like to include in your button.

Discover And Collect The Best Videos From All Over The Web With Magma

Magma gives you a way to discover, collect, share, and comment on videos from all across the Web.  It’s in private beta as of now, but I got an invite and took it for a spin this morning.  So far, I really like what I see.

magma_logo

When you first log into your account, you’ll see the top rated videos followed by the newest added to the site.  Videos are rated by their presence on the Web – meaning how many views and comments it’s received and the attention surrounding it.  You can add any video you like to your own channel and organize them by adding them to categories.  Available channels at the moment include Hulu, Dailymotion, Digg, Vimeo, YouTube, and CollegeHumor.  That just names a few.

magma_2

You can follow channels and people on Magma, so you’ll always know when there’s new content to watch.  One of the coolest features is that each video has its own page that shows you total views and comments from all across the Web.  This allows you to view detailed statistics of each video.  You can also comment on this page as well.
